Asbestos is a strong and incombustible fiber widely used in flooring, insulation, drapes, paint and anything else where improving insulation characteristics were desirable. The small, buoyant fibers can be easily inhaled or swallowed when they become friable. Asbestos can cause a number of serious diseases including: asbestosis, a chronic disease of the lungs that makes breathing more and more difficult; cancer; and mesothelioma. Asbestos usually is white in color and can be exposed to damage easily around pipes in attics and basements.
A common sight in old homes with basements that used boilers and radiators for heating. The asbestos gets damaged and the material circulates in the basement area possibly being drawn into the home through gaps in the floor around vents and interior wood trim.
